Week 9 Waiver Wire: QB RB WR TE
Week 9 Defense
If you read my article on playing the waiver wire game, you know that it is an essential part of winning your fantasy football league. If you haven’t read it, what are you waiting for? I just told you it’s an essential part of winning your fantasy football league! Why do you hate winning?
One of the best ways to maximize your weekly scoring is to stream defenses. This strategy is simple – we aren’t as concerned about good defenses, so much as finding defenses that are playing terrible offenses. Bad offenses are more likely to keep playing bad because if they knew how to be good, they would already be good. Because of this flawless logic, I will be pointing out the best streaming options on a weekly basis. On with the Week 9 defense recs:
Kansas City DEF (26% owned)
It feels weird to say, but the Kansas City Chiefs might be the best streaming option of all the week 9 defenses. While they started off the season terribly, over their last four games, they’ve been a top-five fantasy defense. Even better, they are playing a Cleveland Browns team that is in disarray and happens to give up the 9th most fantasy points to opposing fantasy defenses. If you were ever going to ride the Chiefs defense, now is the time.
Carolina Panthers DEF (47% owned)
The Carolina Panthers have put up very impressive wins in back to back weeks against the Eagles and the Ravens. This week, they are playing a Tampa Bay team that has given up the 10th most fantasy points to opposing fantasy defense. The only concern I have with this match-up is that it is a divisional game, and those can be very weird. However, the Panthers have been consistently good and I’m not quite sure Fitzpatrick has enough magic left to overcome this team.
ABSURDITY CHECK A.K.A. Beware Of Fool’s Gold
New York Jets DEF (16% owned)
The New York Jets is the sixth best fantasy defense through eight weeks. Moreover, they are playing a Miami Dolphins team that has given up the 8th most fantasy points to opposing fantasy defenses. This might seem like an ideal match-up, but don’t be fooled: Over the last four weeks, the Jets defense has fallen on hard times, placing in the bottom third in average points per game. And they did not have a particularly tough stretch of games (Bears, Vikings, Colts, Broncos). I would be very wary of starting the New York Jets defense in week nine.
