The 2020 NFL Draft is in the books, and that means it’s time for us to fully turn our attention to the 2020 NFL season and fantasy football. While COVID-19 means we can’t guarantee an NFL season, our league mates want us to be on our heels, unprepared for the season. Never you fear, Football Absurdity is here to cover all of the 78 fantasy football eligible players drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. Keep in mind, most of these guys won’t get selected in your draft, but you’ll want to know these 2020 NFL draftees when your fantasy football draft comes around. The Indianapolis Colts spent their first two picks on fantasy football eligible players. Let’s take a look at them, and the other two fantasy football eligible players that are now Colts after the 2020 NFL Draft.

Depth Chart:
WR1       T.Y. Hilton
WR2       Parris Campbell
WR3       Michael Pittman
WR4       Zach Pascal
WR5       Dezmon Patmon
TALENT

Pittman is a big and strong receiver, who has a lot of straight-line speed. Unfortunately, the play might be over before he reaches top speed because it takes a while. Once he gets going though, he’s a force of nature. Pittman is an amazing deep ball receiver due to his size, above the rim skills, and incredibly soft hands. He’s also extremely adept at finding holes in zones, likely because he gets a lot of cushions. He’s pretty bad at dealing with press man despite his size. He should be amazing as a deep shot artist. In college, it felt like everything is a flag, either defensive pass interference or offensive pass interference due to his aggression and pressing downfield.

2020 OPPORTUNITY

The Indianapolis Colts have no real second pass-catching threat to speak of. Parris Campbell and Zach Pascal might fit the bill, but neither has grabbed the role yet. Pittman, with his #34 overall selection, steps squarely into the middle of this fray. I think he snags the #2 role from the flotsam and jetsam that make up the wide receiver room behind T.Y. Hilton in Indianapolis. Why? Well, think about the type of player that Philip Rivers likes to throw to. He likes big, strong guys like Keenan Allen or… Michael Pittman? Colts targets are right there for the taking, and Pittman’s large frame and good speed make for an engaging target for Philip Rivers.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

Guys in Michael Pittman’s situation generally don’t pop right off the bat, so I wouldn’t draft Pittman. When there’s a shallow wide receiver room without a clear pecking order, the rookies have to find their way to the top. Think about how excited you were for Deebo Samuel at the end of last season after he couldn’t find a target behind guys like Dante Pettis, Marquise Goodwin, and Kendrick Bourne. Pittman should be a second-half wonder once the depth chart shakes out, so keep your eye on him for signs of a breakout.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK:
Round 2, Pick 9: Jonathan Taylor, Running Back, Wisconsin (5’10” 226 lbs)

Depth Chart:
RB1a      Jonathan Taylor
RB1b      Marlon Mack
RB3        Nyheim Hines
RB4        Jordan Wilkins
TALENT

Taylor has fast feet and churns hard at the end of every run. He also has the great body control needed to snake through traffic and has short-area elusiveness. Has good hands but not great (a couple of drops against Illinois). He turns losses into first downs and has a nice burst through the hole. He moved the pile 3+ yards with regularity. Don’t try to arm tackle him or tackle him by the ankle, it won’t work. Taylor has good vision, and I saw with my own eyes when he used one would-be tackler to take out another.

Unfortunately, he missed some of the wiggle and elusiveness in the open field. He creates extra yards by going through would-be tacklers, not around them, which puts a lot of stop & go to his game. Taylor isn’t very likely to get you an 80-yard touchdown, but more likely than most backs to get multiple first downs on first & ten in a game. He has the talent of a plug-and-play starter, despite his receiving concerns.

2020 OPPORTUNITY

This is a completely messy situation since incumbent Marlon Mack and Jonathan Taylor have overlapping skill sets. While Taylor is much better than Mack, they are likely splitting the first-and-second down work, with Taylor getting the majority of those touches. Things get messy when you realize that neither Mack nor Taylor are well-suited for the Colts’ passing downs work. That will all go to Nyheim Hines. What this leaves you is a situation wherein Mack and Taylor cannibalize each other, lowering both their fantasy football output. Frank Reich told ESPN that he envisions Taylor and Mack as a “one-two punch” for the Colts this season. Of the two, I’d bank on Taylor developing pass-catching chops before Mack, and taking over the whole backfield.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

Taylor is a gamble, but he’s the gamble you want to make. Marlon Mack is good, and Nyheim Hines is fine, but Taylor has a chance to be great. If he can get a stranglehold on this offense, further develop is pass-catching skills, and solidify his role as the alpha in the Colts’ offense, then it’s off to the races. I believe in Taylor putting together a big year. As such, he’s a player to target in the RB20 range, around the fourth-round or fifth-round in your 2020 redraft leagues.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK:
Round 4, Pick 16: Jacob Eason, Quarterback, Washington (6’6” 231 lbs)

Depth Chart:
QB1        Philip Rivers
QB2        Jacoby Brissett
QB3        Jacob Eason
TALENT

Eason threw a ton of bullets in college and never met a tight window throw he didn’t want to try to thread. He had serious accuracy issues in college, and crumbled under pressure. Luckily, that shouldn’t be a problem behind Indy’s extremely strong offensive line. Eason is the draft’s king of the bucket throw, but sometimes he trusts his arm just a little too much. He needs an aggressive and downfield offense in order to thrive, which the Colts weren’t last season. They will likely be that this year as Rivers is far more aggressive than Brissett. He needs some time to finish cooking this year, but there’s a lot of Matthew Stafford in his future.

2020 OPPORTUNITY

If he’s playing, a lot has gone wrong for the Colts. They likely want Rivers to play all year, and if Rivers can’t go, they want Brissett to play. If they get down to their rookie developmental quarterback, things have completely fallen apart for the Colts.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

It’s not wise to expect much from a developmental prospect quarterback in his rookie campaign.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK:
Round 6, Pick 33: Dezmon Patmon, Wide Receiver, Washington State (6’4” 225 lbs)
40-yd Dash Bench Press Vertical Jump Broad Jump 3 Cone 20-yd shuttle 60-yd shuttle
4.48s (u) 15 reps 36.0 in 132.0 in 7.28s 4.38s

Depth Chart:
WR1       T.Y. Hilton
WR2       Parris Campbell
WR3       Michael Pittman
WR4       Zach Pascal
WR5       Dezmon Patmon
TALENT

The Colts traded up in the draft to add Dezmon Patmon, a guy who displays great speed for his size. Unfortunately, he doesn’t use his size and speed very well to make opposing defenders worry about him. He seemingly has one gear and doesn’t demand respect through bullying opposing DBs. He has decent enough ball skills and is a smooth route runner, but needs to realize that he’s 6’4” 225 pounds.

2020 OPPORTUNITY

That’s a deep depth chart in Indianapolis with a lot to sort out ahead of him. I don’t see a world where Patmon leapfrogs all those players ahead of him on the depth chart for a team that will tell anyone who asks that they want to run the dang football. There aren’t more than 40 targets in this offense for Patmon if that.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

It’s more than likely he is a piece for Philip Rivers to use as a deep threat and red zone weapon than a guy you need to worry about in his freshman season.
