Jacksonville Jaguars 2020 Fantasy Football Rookie Roundup

baby jacksonville jaguars

The 2020 NFL Draft is in the books, and that means it’s time for us to fully turn our attention to the 2020 NFL season and fantasy football. While COVID-19 means we can’t guarantee an NFL season, our league mates want us to be on our heels, unprepared for the season. Never you fear, Football Absurdity is here to cover all of the 78 fantasy football eligible players drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. Keep in mind, most of these guys won’t get selected in your draft, but you’ll want to know these 2020 NFL draftees when your fantasy football draft comes around. The 2019 Jacksonville Jaguars weren’t messing around. They spent big money on Nick Foles, who proceeded to break his clavicle and get outplayed by third day rookie Gardner Minshew. Then they were messing around.

The Jaguars took four fantasy football-eligible players in the 2020 NFL Draft, including another day three quarterback. Should you worry about any of these guys for your 2020 fantasy football leagues?

TALENT

Deebo Samuel. That’s all I see when I see Shenault. That, and his flowing dreadlocks. He’s built like a you-know-what brick house, and everything seems so effortless on the field. Colorado used him everywhere, including traditional RB carries, a wildcat or two, and sweeps. He can get em long and he can get em short. Nothing is too hard for him to catch, and he’s always fighting for extra yardage. Doesn’t do a lot of traditional WR things well (limited routes, etc) but pairs well with a #1 like D.J. Chark pestering the defense. Shenault is a jack of all trades, master of none (but at a very high level) type of player.

2020 OPPORTUNITY

We’ve spent the last couple of seasons squinting at a crowded Jacksonville depth chart and hoping that we could divine some clarity from the situation. You know a situation is great when camps pop up for three different WRs as being “the man” there, and a fourth guy emerges, instead. That’s the Jaguars wide receiver corps since Allen Robinson left. Now, they seem to have a viable one-two punch with D.J. Chark and Laviska Shenault.

The Jaguars clearly took Shenault with an eye toward the future with a one-two punch with D.J. Chark for QB Gardner Minshew. Shenault had a core muscle surgery in late April, so he will miss many offseason programs that might happen. However, he should quickly shake off the other also-rans on the depth chart to take his place alongside Chark as the #2 target in the offense.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

Shenault’s mostly getting looked over in fantasy football drafts. Right now I would peg him in the WR50-60 range, which is mostly a luxury for people who might instead choose to get a second QB or a depth running back. If you need an upside pick at the end of your draft, then Shenault could provide that. Just remember that Deebo Samuel and A.J. Brown, two YAC monster rookies last year, did not break out until later in the season. If you draft Shenault, it’s with the understanding that he won’t develop for a few weeks.

Round 5, Pick 20: Collin Johnson, Wide Receiver, Texas (6’6” 222 lbs)

WR6       Collin Johnson
TALENT

Johnson was completely erased against LSU, but put a much better tape together against Utah. He has incredible high point and circus catches, mostly due to size (6’6”!). He worked himself open after getting destroyed by LSU. Johnson doesn’t play fully up to his size and sometimes gets bullied, which is unacceptable. Not a whole lot of speed with him. If he can get with a good WR coach at the NFL level, he should develop into something good.

2020 OPPORTUNITY

I don’t see room for Collin Johnson in this offense outside of being a red zone threat for Gardner Minshew. There’s just too much going on with this offense to maybe even keep Johnson off the practice squad. For 2020, he’s probably not going to do much outside of helping Minshew.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

I am not close to being interested in Johnson in any and all redraft leagues.

Round 6, Pick 10: Jake Luton, Quarterback, Oregon State (6’6” 224 lbs)
40-yd Dash Bench Press Vertical Jump Broad Jump 3 Cone 20-yd shuttle 60-yd shuttle

Depth Chart:
QB1        Gardner Minshew
QB2        Mike Glennon
QB3        Jake Luton
TALENT

Luton was a pitch and catch, one read and go quarterback in college. He doesn’t have a lot of skills that would immediately translate into the NFL game. He has a strong delivery and is big, that’s pretty much what he brings to the table. Luton has a weird hitch in his delivery which makes his ability to thrive in the NFL almost non-existent due to the windows closing so quickly. He also flames out entirely when the pocket collapses. Luton will run when given the opportunity but he isn’t the most agile or the most fleet of foot. He’s a destitute man’s Justin Herbert.

2020 OPPORTUNITY

Gardner Minshew is mostly unproven, and we know exactly what Mike Glennon is. At this point, I wouldn’t rule out four or so starts out of Luton. I’m not planting my flag there, but there’s a very real possibility that the Jaguars see their season play out that way.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

I don’t have any interest in him, but Jay Gruden could scheme him into usability in 2QB leagues. That is, if he makes any starts.

Round 6, Pick 27: Tyler Davis, Tight End, Georgia Tech (6’4” 250 lbs)

Depth Chart:
TE1         Tyler Eifert
TE2         Josh Oliver
TE3         James O’Shaughnessy
TE4         Tyler Davis
TALENT

I’m not going to belabor this: Davis is a blocking tight end. That’s it. He’s fine at it, but he doesn’t bring any fantasy football skills into the fold.

2020 OPPORTUNITY

He’s the #4 tight end whose focus is blocking in Jaguars offense that isn’t TE-centric.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

If there’s one thing I love more than rookie tight ends, it’s blocking rookie tight ends. If Davis tripled his per-game fantasy points form his final year at Georgia Tech, he would average 7.99 fantasy points per game (half-PPR). TE12 last year was 8.4 fantasy points per game. He has no fantasy value.
