Half of the fantasy football regular season is in the books, and the NFL landscape is starting to calcify. That means we can start to make some hard decisions about players on our rosters, including cutting those, if necessary. We are always here to provide advice (aka cover for your decisions if they don’t work out) on who to drop. Below you’ll find players rostered in at least 50% of Yahoo! leagues whose rostership rates should take a hit. As always, this is a list of suggestions, and not necessarily must-drops (except Chris Godwin). Let’s dive in!
QUARTERBACKS
Bo Nix, Denver (70% rostered)
I’m not buying his 26 fantasy points, probably because 11.2 of his points came from a 52 yard touchdown run that, at one point, had zero Cardinals on the screen. That had more to do with a broken defense than Bo Nix, and because of that, I am going to set that aside. He came off of back-to-back single-digit fantasy days, and gets the third-worst defense against quarterbacks, and his bye. You can move on from Nix in shallower leagues.
Kirk Cousins, Las Vegas (57% rostered)
Cousins squeezed out a 20-point game against the Rams, but he completed a season-low 56.1% of his passes, and a weird fourth quarter allowed him the ability to hit Tre Tucker for a long touchdown. He’s looked increasingly out of his depth in recent weeks, and the Raiders get three-straight bottom-ten matchups (Jets, Niners, Seahawks) over the next three weeks. We are probably going to see Fernando Mendoza sooner or later. And if we don’t see him, Cousins is still in for bad times ahead.
RUNNING BACKS
Aaron Jones Sr., Minnesota (94% rostered)
Jones took a backseat to Jordan Mason in Mason’s return to action, with Jones getting just four carries outside of the first drive of the game. He left with a knee injury in the fourth quarter, but touched the ball just five times (and fumbled one of them) after that first drive. You can hang onto him in deeper leagues as a stash, but in shallower leagues, you can move on.
Tyler Allgeier, Arizona (65% rostered)
Bam Knight flat-out looks like the better running back in Arizona, and they are splitting touches nearly 50/50 in Jeremiyah Love’s absence. With Love’s return looming, you are looking at a touchdown-or-bust bet if you start Allgeier moving forward. You can go for that, but if you are in a roster crunch, he’s not a pick you are likely to regret.
MarShawn Lloyd, Green Bay (51% rostered)
With MarShawn Lloyd (1) not being all that effective and (2) taking a back seat to Josh Jacobs upon his return, there’s no reason to roster Lloyd.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Davante Adams, Los Angeles (87% rostered)
Adams is set to miss between six and ten weeks with a hamstring that fully detached from the bone. He’s aged, so the Rams are likely to have him back at the back end of that projection. Even if he misses six weeks, that’s just before the fantasy playoffs, and you have to make them before you worry about winning them.
Josh Downs, Indianapolis (84% rostered)
Downs has four targets in two of his last four games, and doesn’t have more than 8.7 PPR points since week three. The Colts are doing terribly, and they need to change at quarterback. Unfortunately, this, combined with Keenan Allen taking short area targets, have left Josh Downs without much to do in the receiving game. They get the Jags, who are a good wide receiver matchup, in week eight, if you want to hold onto hope for one more week.
Marvin Harrison Jr., Houston (75% rostered)
Harrison was exactly as involved this week as he was the prior week (four targets). He caught one of them for a touchdown. It’s not a high-upside play at this point as the Texans enter their bye. That bye is your only savior, as MHJ & C.J. Stroud could put in serious work during that break to get Harrison up to speed. But I am not bullish.
Chris Godwin Jr., Tampa Bay (73% rostered)
Godwin has zero double-digit fantasy days this season, and his season-high (6/31) came in week four. The Falcons are on the docket, so he could squeeze out value next week, but if you aren’t going to start him, then there’s no point in keeping him around.
Courtland Sutton, Denver (58% rostered)
Sutton finished week seven with three catches for 45 yards. That is a terrible output for a fantasy football roster, and also his second-most yards in a game this season, and the most catches. He has zero games above 9.8 PPR points, and that game came because he scored a touchdown. It’s dire in Denver. If you want hope, Jaylen Waddle left with an injury, so he could see an expanded role in week eight… against the top-ranked Chiefs pass defense.
TIGHT ENDS
Juwan Johnson, New Orleans (78% rostered)
Juwan Johnson has 10 targets, 5 catches, and 23 yards over his last three games. His target share and route participation are ticking down, and there’s no sign that’s going to change. The Saints are headed into their bye, and hope to have Jordyn Tyson make his NFL debut for their week thirteen matchup against Cleveland.
Mark Andrews, Baltimore (70% rostered)
Andrews has one top-10 finish, two top-12 finishes, and has been TE21 or worse in each of the last three weeks. This is pure roster momentum, as he finished this week with under 5.5 PPR points for the fourth time in five weeks. He’s old, he’s slow, he’s dropping footballs, and he shouldn’t be on your fantasy football roster.
