If you read my article on playing the waiver wire game, you know that it is an essential part of winning your fantasy football league. If you haven’t read it, what are you waiting for? I just told you it’s an essential part of winning your fantasy football league! Why do you hate winning? One of the best ways to maximize your weekly scoring is to stream defenses. This strategy is simple – we aren’t as concerned about good defenses, so much as finding defenses that are playing terrible offenses. Bad offenses are more likely to keep playing bad because if they knew how to be good, they would already be good. Because of this flawless logic, I will be pointing out the best streaming options for week seven.
Streaming Defenses Option #1: Carolina Panthers (66% rostered) @ New York Giants
While Carolina has a higher roster rate, with bye weeks thinning the pool, the Panthers are too good an option to ignore. Especially when they are playing a New York Giants team that is giving up the eighth-most fantasy points to opposing defenses. The Giants have the seventh-most turnovers in the NFL, score the sixth-fewest points per game, and have the tenth-worst third-down conversion rate. Simply put, the Giants are bad at offense. Unfortunately for them, the Carolina Panthers are very good at defense. They have the number six scoring defense in the NFL. They are sixth in sacks, have the third-best passing defense, and the second-best conversion rate on third downs. Good defense versus bad offense is always a safe bet, and there are few bets safer than the Carolina Panthers in week seven.
Streaming Defenses Option #2: Cleveland Browns (60% rostered) @ Denver Broncos
At first glance, the Cleveland Browns have not been very good at defense. I’d argue they’ve just had an incredibly rough slate of games to open up the season. They’ve faced the Chiefs, Chargers, Vikings, and Cardinals. They have the sixth-best run defense in football. On top of that, they have allowed the seventh-fewest first downs and have the third-most sacks. While they aren’t starting the season strong, they’ve been decent in their two games with favorable match-ups. And the Broncos match up very well in favor of the Browns. They’ve given up the third-most sacks to opposing defenses, have the fifth-worst red-zone offense, and the worst third-down conversion rate in the NFL. Everything the Browns do well, they are bad at. On top of all this, the Broncos have given up the seventh-most fantasy points to opposing defenses. The Browns are a fantastic streaming option for week seven.
Streaming Defenses Option #3: Miami Dolphins/Atlanta Falcons (21%/5% rostered) @ Atlanta Falcons/Miami Dolphins
If all the Arizonas, New Englands, and New Orleanses are gone, the waiver wire starts looking very bare after Carolina and Cleveland. The best option is picking which team is more likely to completely implode in week seven. The Miami Dolphins or the Atlanta Falcons. Then grab whichever defense is playing them. They are both available on your waiver wire and they are both very bad. The Miami Dolphins are giving up the sixth-most fantasy points to opposing defenses. Of course, the Atlanta Falcons have given up the fifth-most fantasy points to opposing defenses. Both these teams want to make their opponents look good. It is just a question of which one won’t let you down.
