2024 Fantasy Football Rookie Roundup: The Houston Texans

The Texans jumped forward about 2 years in their team-building plan as C.J. Stroud hit the ground running last season. He elevated Nico Collins, who floundered under prior quarterbacks and clicked immediately with fellow rookie Tank Dell. Then, this offseason they acquired Joe Mixon & Stefon Diggs, turning this good offense into a potentially extremely potent one. Unfortunately, that didn’t leave a lot of room, or need, for fantasy football-eligible players in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, they took a tight end and a running back, so let’s take a look at Cade Stover and Jawhar Jordan!

FULL 2024 HOUSTON TEXANS DRAFT RESULTS

Round Pick Player Pos College
2 42 Kamari Lassiter CB Georgia
2 59 Blake Fisher OT Notre Dame
3 78 Calen Bullock S USC
4 123 Cade Stover TE Ohio St
6 188 Jamal Hill LB Oregon
6 205 Jawhar Jordan RB Louisville
7 238 Solomon Byrd EDGE USC
7 247 Marcus Harris DT Auburn
7 249 LaDarius Henderson OT Michigan

Round 4, Pick 123 Overall: Cade Stover, Tight End, Ohio State (6’4” 247 lbs)

Talent:

He’s fine. He will make some noise somewhere down the line if an offense decides that they want to have a tight end randomly have 85 targets for no discernible reason. He’s a proficient pass catcher, but he doesn’t work himself open against zones, and his routes can have crisp angles, they don’t get him open that much. He has good enough post-catch traits to make him do enough to have evaluators interested. But… that’s it. He doesn’t do a ton with the football, and he doesn’t do a ton to get open. While he isn’t the best blocker, he is an avid blocker, looking to take on contact, neutralize contact, and then find someone else to contact and neutralize. He’s just not great. Stover is the ur 2024 TE. He’s fine.

NFL Comparison: Cade Otton
2024 Opportunity:

When the Texans are fully operational, Dalton Schultz is the fourth fiddle in the passing game, behind Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, and Tank Dell all commanding a massive portion of the targets. Now, for Cade Stover to get an opportunity to play enough snaps to matter, he will need to take Dalton Schultz’s role. I don’t see him getting a lot of opportunities in 2024.

No thanks, I’ll pass.

Round 6, Pick 205 Overall: Jawhar Jordan, Running Back, Louisville (5’10” 193 lbs)

Talent:

Jordan is a wiggly back who does an excellent job of making defenders miss in a phone booth. As he gains speed, he gets more difficult to tackle, as his open-field processing is incredibly good. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a second gear, and his top-end speed is nothing to write home about (4.56 40-yard dash). His biggest issue is that he goes down as soon as a defender touches him, rarely shedding tackles and frequently taking big hits because of his size. He has good hands out of the backfield, but he isn’t going to wow you with his pass-catching chops.

2024 Opportunity:

Jordan will have an opportunity to produce as the 1B to Joe Mixon’s 1A, but that is a role that he will have to fight with Dameon Pierce to secure. Luckily, I don’t see Pierce as too much of a threat to Jordan, but you bring in Joe Mixon because he can eat a ton of volume. So, that means that Jordan will have limited appeal except in the case of a Joe Mixon injury. Even if that happens, it’s more likely that he and Pierce split touches than the Texans turning the backfield over to Jordan entirely.

2024 Fantasy Football Outlook:

The Texans will have a potent offense in 2024, but Jordan won’t have the opportunity to be a big part of it. If Mixon and Pierce get hurt, then he should be a good RB2, but that’s a long way off.
