The 2020 NFL Draft is in the books, and that means it’s time for us to fully turn our attention to the 2020 NFL season and fantasy football. While COVID-19 means we can’t guarantee an NFL season, our league mates want us to be on our heels, unprepared for the season. Never you fear, Football Absurdity is here to cover all of the 78 fantasy football eligible players drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. Keep in mind, most of these guys won’t get selected in your draft, but you’ll want to know these 2020 NFL draftees when your fantasy football draft comes around. The New York Jets took a top-ten WR in the draft, as well as a running back and a quarterback. Can any of them return 2020 fantasy football usefulness?

Depth Chart:
WR1 Jamison Crowder
WR2 Denzel Mims
WR3 Breshad Perriman
WR4 Josh Doctson
WR5 Braxton Berrios
TALENT
Mims is a long strider with easy speed, though he may have used his sheer athleticism to cover up some technical deficiencies in college. I like him a good deal to bully smaller corners in the NFL, as he’s exceptional at adjusting to the ball and plucking it out of the air with his vice grip hands. With bigger corners, he may struggle with physicality, as he struggled with contested catches. There are two paths Mims can take: one where his physical gifts overcome his technical deficiencies and he can produce in the NFL, and one where technically sound, strong corners swallow him up. Unfortunately, the second is more likely to happen this year than the first. He’ll need to adapt to the NFL game and add some polish before he truly realizes what he can bring to the table.
2020 OPPORTUNITY
Denzel Mims sits amid a very uninspiring depth chart. Right now, I peg him as the #2 target to Jamison Crowder, only because Crowder inexplicably averages 100 targets per sixteen games in his career. You don’t think of 100+ targets when you think of Crowder, but the numbers don’t lie. I don’t really believe in Breshad Perriman’s small sample size breakout at the end of last year with a more YOLO QB in Jameis Winston. Mims will get his opportunity, and I like his athleticism. He’s worth a dart throw in a deeper (14+ team) three-wide receiver league, but in most leagues, he’s an in-season pickup. Right now he carries an ADP inside the top-100 on Sleeper, but that likely factors in rookie and dynasty drafts happening right now that boost his numbers. Mims’ FantasyPros Expert Consensus Rank is WR65. He’s an upside dart at this point.
2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK
That’s the real question. Will his raw athleticism win the day? That would take Sam Darnold taking a step forward and Adam Gase pulling his head out of his rear end. Unfortunately, we’ve been waiting on that second part for about a half-decade now to no avail. He could turn in a top-36 rookie campaign, but he’s about the fifth or sixth rookie I would peg for that result. Still, it’s possible.

Depth Chart:
RB1 Le’Veon Bell
RB2 Frank Gore
RB3 Josh Adams
RB4 La’Mical Perine
RB5 Trent Cannon
TALENT
Perine has above average athleticism and runs hard, but gets taken down too easily for my taste. He has some highlight plays and flashes traits that could be great at the next level but lacks the top-end athleticism to truly hit it big at the NFL level. Perine is a physical guy who is great at getting the first few yards through good vision and bounce but has trouble stacking moves to really get going. The Gators liked to flex him out wide and he ran real, honest to goodness routes. Ultimately, he profiles as the 40% guy in a 60/40 timeshare at best.
2020 OPPORTUNITY
Le’Veon Bell played at least 69% of the team’s offensive snaps in all but three games last season. He missed one with the flu, which doesn’t tend to be a recurring problem to worry about this year. There’s no path to serious touches for the guy behind Le’Veon Bell. Even if there was a path to touches, Perine sits far down the chart, fighting with fellow newcomer Frank Gore and incumbent backup Josh Adams for touches.
2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK
There’s a long row to hoe for 2020 fantasy football relevance for La’Mical Perine. He isn’t the most talented player on earth, and he’s buried in the depth chart in what would undoubtedly be a committee situation if Lev Bell goes down.

Round 4, Pick 19: James Morgan, Quarterback, FIU (6’4” 229 lbs)

Depth Chart:
QB1 Sam Darnold
QB2 David Fales
QB3 James Morgan
TALENT
James Morgan has an exceptional fastball, but that’s it. He has absolutely zero touch on any passes and scattershot ball placement, including dump offs. Morgan also has a gunslinger attitude and his no risk it, no biscuit attitude would fit well as the Lions’ backup to Matthew Stafford or with Bruce Arians. Still, he has a high ceiling and could potentially settle in as a slightly above average backup QB. Morgan’s passes are wildly inconsistent, but his highs are so high that it makes sense that coaches would take a flier on him, just to see if they can rein in his worst proclivities. He’s a project, and his gunslinging could raise some preseason eyebrows, but he has a way to go to be anything useful in the NFL.
2020 OPPORTUNITY
Unless Sam Darnold gets mono again, I don’t see a path to Morgan usurping him.
2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK
In a deep two-quarterback league, maybe. Darnold’s missed three games in each of his first two seasons in the league, so Morgan might get his shot. It is more likely that David Fales gets another whack at being the starter first, though.
