The 2020 NFL Draft is in the books, and that means it’s time for us to fully turn our attention to the 2020 NFL season and fantasy football. While COVID-19 means we can’t guarantee an NFL season, our league mates want us to be on our heels, unprepared for the season. Never you fear, Football Absurdity is here to cover all of the 78 fantasy football eligible players drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. Keep in mind, most of these guys won’t get selected in your draft, but you’ll want to know these 2020 NFL draftees when your fantasy football draft comes around. We finish our tour around the AFC West with the new-look Los Angeles Chargers.
I’m not sure which I hate more: the Chargers’ first first-round pick or their new logo. I mean seriously, Chargers. Your logo is better suited for a team in your own stadium. How do you manage that? How do you pull that off? Insanity. Anyway, the Chargers took quarterback Justin Herbert in the first, running back Josh Kelley in the fourth, and a couple of wide receivers on day three. Do any of these guys have any fantasy football relevance for 2020?

Depth Chart:
QB1 Tyrod Taylor
QB2 Justin Herbert
QB3 Easton Stick
TALENT
I’m not a huge fan of Justin Herbert. I think his decision making and propensity for getting flustered in the pocket will cause all sorts of problems for him in the NFL. However, he has a great shot at starting in 2020. Tyrod Taylor has barely flashed at times in an inconsistent career, and Anthony Lynn will likely end up on the hot seat and will feel the pressure to give Herbert a shot at starting. Lynn stated this offseason that he wanted to get a mobile QB to replace the statue, Philip Rivers. While Herbert isn’t Tua, he has some wheels. He also has a freaking cannon for an arm.
2020 OPPORTUNITY
Tyrod Taylor is listed as the QB1, but we all remember how that worked out for Tyrod when the Browns wanted to ease in Baker Mayfield. I would expect Herbert to be under center by week six or seven at the latest.
2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK
If Herbert gets the start, I expect enough long bombs and scramble runs to give him some fantasy relevance. He’s likely a poor man’s Josh Allen for fantasy football purposes: not the best NFL QB, but he does enough different things and has enough big plays to contribute to flash startable weeks his rookie year and contribute to fantasy football leagues as/if his career develops.

Depth Chart:
RB1 Austin Ekeler
RB2 Justin Jackson
RB3 Joshua Kelley
TALENT
Joshua Kelley really feels like a litmus test for what you value in a runner these days. He is a strong, aggressive runner, with good hands. He also does a great job of making sure he gets an extra yard or two out of runs by falling forward. Unfortunately, he always gets stacked up at the line of scrimmage because his slow gather and change of direction both allow defenders to catch up to him pretty easily. He can make one guy miss, but not two. Unfortunately for Kelley, there are usually eleven guys trying to tackle him.
Kelly has some good traits as I said. He just has no real wiggle or burst to speak of and might fall into the realm of plodding if it weren’t for his 4.49-second 40-yard dash displaying his good long speed. He has great hands and body adjustment to passes, which will make him a quality pass-catching back for the Chargers. I fear he’s Just A Guy at the NFL level.
2020 OPPORTUNITY
He’s contending with Justin Jackson for the backup role behind Austin Ekeler. As of right now, I see Justin Jackson starting the season with the role. Jackson hasn’t balled out of control on tape, which means that he likely has a tenuous grasp on the backup role. Should Kelley get the backup role, he would likely get plenty of opportunities to produce as the 1B to Ekeler’s 1A. Despite his good combine results, nothing about him pops off the tape, so don’t expect superstardom, but he is a good back who should be in a decent situation.
2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK
This really comes down to if you think Kelley or incumbent Justin Jackson is better. I think Jackson is better and will be the primary backup behind Austin Ekeler. Should Kelley beat out Justin Jackson in camp, he’s worth being on your roster with a late pick or a shortlist of guys to snatch up early in the season. But track the competition to make sure Jackson isn’t winning it outright to start the season. If COVID-19 costs us a lot of training camp time, then Jackson likely gets the 1B role.

Round 5, Pick 5: Joe Reed, Wide Receiver, Virginia (6’0” 224 lbs)

Depth Chart:
WR1 Keenan Allen
WR2 Mike Williams
WR3 Andre Patton
WR4 Joe Reed
WR5 K.J. Hill
WR6 Jason Moore
TALENT
All drafting Joe Reed made me realize about the Chargers is how incredibly thin their wide receiver corps is. Joe Reed isn’t great, but he steps right in as their fourth wide receiver. Joe Reed was glowingly described in the best possible terms as an Offensive Weapon for Virginia. However, when I see him, I see a guy without a position at the NFL level. He mostly hung around the line of scrimmage and didn’t do much downfield. When he did go downfield it was mostly ineffective. He played all over the formation, which tells me the Chargers are hoping for a budget Deebo Samuel. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for when you dive into the bargain bin for a gadget player. There’s a thin line between Deebo and Randall Cobb and guys like Dexter McCluster.
2020 OPPORTUNITY
Well, the depth chart is thin and he’s technically the fourth wide receiver in Los Angeles, but he’s extremely unpolished. He’ll likely be the Chargers’ main kick returner since that’s his main skill. He will get in on goal-line packages because he has decent red zone chops.
2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK
The Chargers’ pass offense is extremely top-heavy, and any injuries to the top guys (Allen/Williams/Hunter Henry/Austin Ekeler) likely means more targets to the other guys rather than doling targets out to other players. There’s not a world where I’m interested in Joe Reed for fantasy football in 2020 unless things change in a hurry for him.

2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK:
Round 7, Pick 6 : K.J. Hill, Wide Receiver, Ohio State (6’0″ 198 lbs)
40-yd Dash | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3 Cone | 20-yd shuttle | 60-yd shuttle |

Depth Chart:
WR1 Keenan Allen
WR2 Mike Williams
WR3 Andre Patton
WR4 Joe Reed
WR5 K.J. Hill
WR6 Jason Moore
TALENT
Hill is Ohio State’s all-time catch leader because Ohio State decided to manufacture a bunch of catches for Hill. He doesn’t do a lot to get himself open, despite extensive and detailed route tree. However, he does get a lot of YAC but doesn’t do a lot to get open in the first place. A lot of him being open is manufactured or him working underneath cushion given him. He belongs on an NFL roster but has limited upside at the NFL level. His fantasy football utility will be 100% scheme-based. I’m not so sure Anthony Lynn will manufacture enough touches for him to matter this year. He’s a possession slot receiver. That’s it.
2020 OPPORTUNITY
The quarterback carousel and top-heavy targets leave little room for Hill to do much this season. He could back his way into targets with multiple injuries ahead of him, but that’s not how you draft. He’s not even on a long list of guys I’m looking at outside of deep PPR desperation if the roster crumbles ahead of him.
2020 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK
See the outlook for Joe Reed and copy and paste, but with an eye toward Hill having slightly more pass-catching talent who might make his way up the depth chart sooner rather than later. Remember: less than 2% of WRs who get drafted outside the top-100 picks turn in top-36 seasons.
