2018 Fantasy Football Rookie Roundup: New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints had one of the best offenses in football last season and added two fantasy football eligible players in the draft. Are they worth rostering?

Tre’Quan Smith, Wide Receiver, Third Round
Tre’Quan Smith is a quality wide receiver out of UCF. He’s not large, but he’s big for how fast he can be on tape. Smith doesn’t run the best routes, but his speed more than made up for it in college. The big problem with Smith is his concentration on contested balls, allowing more than his fair share to get knocked free from his mitts. Still, he’s an extremely quality receiver that will likely be an upgrade on Ted Ginn in the future.

“In the future” is the key phrase there. He’s simply buried on the depth chart behind a ton of wide receivers, and even a running back. If there are some key injuries to Cam Meredith and/or Ted Ginn, he is a name to check out, but he will need to work harder at the point of attack to be fantasy football relevant in 2018. Still, the talent and upside make him worth a flier in a deep (deep, deep) league.

Boston Scott, Running Back, Sixth Round
The short of what you need to know about Scott’s 2018 fantasy football potential is that the Saints are bringing in every available running back under the sun to try to figure out what to do behind Alvin Kamara during Mark Ingram’s suspension. The long of it with Scott is that he is a diminutive speed back who will need to carve out a Darren Sproles-like role to succeed, and he needs to do it behind Mark Ingram and the Charizard to Sproles’s Charmander (Alvin Kamara). He can force a lot of missed tackles and had high yards after contact in college, but he’s extremely tiny. The Saints would need to work Scott into any potential role and isn’t worth a flier in any redraft leagues.
