2018 Fantasy Football Rookie Roundup: Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers took a couple running backs in the 2017 NFL Draft, snagging Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones. This year, they spent all their offensive skill position chips on wide receivers. Not only did they snag three wide receivers, they snagged three guys on the shortlist for the 2018 NFL Draft all-name team. J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown are your newest Packers wideouts. This has been a position worth mining for fantasy football goodness in the past… what about 2018?

J’Mon Moore, Wide Receiver, Round Four
Moore has a lot of traits that you look for in a wide receiver. He has good size, speed, and hands. Out of the three wideouts the Pack drafting this year, he likely has the highest ceiling but has the hardest path to production this season. He has trouble with press coverage and doesn’t adequately use his size. He’s a definite high-ceiling lottery ticket in real-life football, and useless in 2018 fantasy football. It would take a lot of injuries to get him into a top-36 fantasy football receiving option this year.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Wide Receiver, Round Five
If you’re big and you’re fast, you have A UNIQUE SIZE-SPEED COMBINATION. This phrase has been thrown around so much by talking heads that it is virtually meaningless. If everyone big and fast has this combination, then nobody does. That having been said, MVS has… a unique size-speed combination. At 6’4”, he torched the 40-yard dash at the combine, posting a 4.37s dash. He has great physical traits but desperately needs to clean up his routes. However, for his 2018, he and Aaron Rodgers only have to worry about his nine route. Unfortunately, MVS is the type of player I hate: lots of physical traits to get hype but has trouble playing the game of football. Iffy routes and iffy hands make for an iffy 2018 fantasy football prospect.

He gets a bump in outlook for a potential DFS GPP option when the Pack play a terrible pass defense. Still, stop me when you find where he fits in the Packers offense pecking order: Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, Geronimo Allison, Ty Montgomery, Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, Jimmy Graham…

Equanimeous St. Brown, Wide Receiver, Round Six
Empire Strikes Back (ESB) has more of that unique size-speed combination that is uniquely present in nearly every wideout that is big and fast. He is strong and decently fast. He has inconsistency and focus drops issues in college, but early returns have him as the best of the three Pack rookie wideouts in minicamp. Ultimately, he will need an injury to get any sort of opportunity to really produce. Just like the other two guys in this write-up, he needs a lot to break his way for 2018 fantasy football production.
